I was sitting on the lounge feeding my 6-month-old son and thinking, I really don't want to go back to work. My maternity leave was coming to a swift end, and reality was setting in. We had made our move to my parents 150-acre property 7 months prior. It had not been an easy adjustment. I longed for the days I could duck to the shops to grab milk, or browse for some new clothes. Although we are not too far away from the big smoke. We are far enough away to only go into town for a reason and to do more than just look. This I hated, Howerver that’s another story. Back to me sitting on the couch not wanting to return to work, I came up with a great idea, we will just get cows. I mean how hard could it be? everyone else here has them, and their eyelashes are just so long and beautiful!

So when my partner got home, I blurted out “we should get some cows.” He looked at me like I was joking. I explained that I didn't want to go back to work and work my usual hours and this would fix that.
Backstory time my partner grew up on a very small hobby farm with a few cows and a few pigs. But it seemed as though he knew that even a few would be a huge change for us, but I knew he was eager to do something with the land. After a short conversation, we agreed! We were getting cows! So the next morning I jumped on google. I literally searched cows better than Angus (because everyone does Angus around here, and I wanted to be different... typical) and boom! Speckle Park Cattle came up. So I clicked on an article about them. I sent an image to my partner, and the rest was history. It was love at first sight. We researched all about Speckle Park cattle, they ticked every single box of what we were looking for. And did I mentioned they look absolutely stunning!
So our next step was to asses what improvements had to be made to the property. And there was a lot! Obviously, nothing is easy in life. We had to buy yards, ramps, crush, fencing, everything! So then we really had to look hard at our budget. We had been saving for a house deposit to re-buy back in town. But my partner and I were so excited we just couldn't walk away now, this new adventure was our future.

So we talked to some farmers we knew and asked a lot of questions. Watched YouTube tutorials on how to move cattle, and googled how to vaccinate cattle too. We then sat down with our accountant and hashed things out. We left feeling on top of the world. All we had to do was buy some cows. And naturally, we brought the closest, nearest things we could find! and 5 months after I sat on the couch not wanting to go back to work, our first mob got off the truck and walked down our homemade cattle ramp (it was intense). We welcomed 10 mixed breed steers, 3 cows in calf and 1 F2 Speckle park bull, Franky.

12 months on and we have learnt so much, spent a whole heap of money and made only about 5% back. But it has been such a wonderful experience, and more money will follow. I'm so happy my children get to grow up with this fantastic lifestyle. The old city girl Sam is still here however, I still love shoes, handbags, clothes and local council rubbish removal, oh and I'd love to not worry about water ever again. But we can't have it all. Every day I try to learn something new about cattle and farming operations. But with that said, I still feel like I know much more about the Kardashian's.
